Global Golf4 Cancer’s first campaign in the West of Ireland

Global Golf4 Cancer was launched in 2017 with an inaugural campaign in the west of Ireland. It featured (and continues to feature) a spectacular collection of golf clubs situated along the country’s famous Wild Atlantic Way coastal route between Malin Head in the north and The Old Head of Kinsale in the south ... So from Ballyliffin in Co Donegal to Old Head Golf Links in Co Cork - via the likes of Rosapenna, Murvagh, Co Sligo, Enniscrone, Carne, Westport, Connemara, Galway Bay, Lahinch, Ballybunion, Tralee and Waterville. Each of these golf clubs has been invited to periodically fly a Global Golf4 Cancer Flag on its 4th hole, and to occasionally host or facilitate cancer fundraising activities

The 1st Global Golf4 Cancer Awareness ‘Golf-Walk’

Nick Edmund initiated the campaign on 4th March, 2017 when he set off from Malin Head and began a two-stage 2,000km walk around the Wild Atlantic Way carrying a set of golf clubs. During this awareness-creating ‘golf-walk’ Nick called into the 40 clubs en route and, after playing their 4th hole, presented each with a GG4C 4-Flag. He completed the journey by playing the 4th at Old Head Golf Links on 4th May, 2018.

Growing the campaign in 2021, and linking with Ireland’s ‘Ancient East’

Of course, many of the Emerald Isle’s most celebrated golf courses are not located adjacent to the Wild Atlantic Way. So, in early 2021, our plan is to invite some of the finest golf clubs and resorts in the Dublin area and eastern Ireland to join the campaign; this will include several classic links courses as well as a selection of the country’s outstanding inland layouts. By involving clubs right across the country, and in the process create a ‘Wild Atlantic Way & Ancient East’ campaign, our flag will fly regularly at a comprehensive collection of Ireland’s greatest golf courses.

Involving the Golf Community

Golf club members, visiting golfers and the wider golfing community can all participate in the Global Golf4 Cancer campaign – particularly by spreading the word (e.g. via social media) and through fundraising or making donations to the cause. While developing the campaign in Ireland we have been able to call upon the generous support and expertise of North & West Coast Links Golf, South West Ireland Golf (SWING) and Dublin-based Carr Golf. We have also received considerable help from IAGTO, the Global Golf Tourism Organisation, and various individuals. This assistance has helped us maximise the awareness and fundraising potential of the GG4C campaign and to publicise it both nationally and internationally.

Our Irish ‘Founding Charity Partner’

While Global Golf4 Cancer strives to support cancer fighters and cancer charities worldwide, our campaign in Ireland has enabled us to particularly benefit and ‘shine a light’ on the superb work of Galway based charity, Cancer Care West – one of GG4C’s four ‘Founding Charity Partners’.
